The 4th Annual Gold Medal Plates competition will be taking place in St. John’s on Thursday November 8th. The event takes place 10 different cities nationwide pitting the top Chefs in each region against each other in a culinary standoff. The object is to serve a dish paired with a Canadian wine to 400 guests, each dish and pairing is judged by a panel of celebrity judges. The winner is the chef with the best dish and pairing, however there is an award for the best wine of the show to help recognize the great Canadian wines being showcased.

The winners in each region head to Kelowna BC for the National competition comprised of a variety of challenges. The proceeds from the Gold Medal Plates competitions all go to help Canada’s Olympic athletes and hopefuls.  It’s an excellent event for a great cause, more information can be found at: http://goldmedalplates.com/

This year in St. John’s there are 8 Chefs competing, Chef Hussey of Chinched Bistro among them. For the 2011 competition Chinched prepared Charcuterie; A trio of Pork Face paired with the Henry of Pelham Cuvée Catharine Niagra Brut. The dish was extremely well received and for our first competition the whole experience was a blast.

For our 2012 entry we will be serving Potato Wrapped Cod, Pressed Ham Hocks, Local Baising Greens, Smoked Apple Relish and an Apple Cider Brown Butter Vinaigrette. The dish will be paired with the Tawse Winery Niagara Valley 2010 Sketches Chardonnay.
