Over the next week at Chinched we’ll be making some changes to our wine list. We’re adjusting the pricing, adding some new favorites and we’ve even got a half bottle and cellared selection in the works.
One of the new additions to our list is a unique white from Germany, the Weingut Tesch Deep Blue Blanc de Noirs Pinot Noir.
German wine has been enjoying resurgence as of late; it might surprise you to know that Germany is in the top 10 wine producing countries in the world. While the majority of the wine produced is white (and the majority of that is Riesling), reds from Germany are increasing in quality and popularity with Spatburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir) leading the way.
The Tesch winery has been a family owned winery since 1723 and can be found in the Nahe region of Germany. The vineyards are located in Langenlonsheim, one of the oldest and largest wine-growing villages in the Nahe. The namesake of the region the Nahe River along with the region’s proximity to the Rhine River contributes to the moderate weather in the region. This combined with steep south facing slopes and soil composed of volcanic rock and ash provide excellent conditions for the growth of grapes.
The Tesch Deep Blue is an interesting white. The term ‘Blanc de Noirs’ refers to the fact that this is a white wine vinified from red grapes. This is accomplished by only fermenting the juice extracted from the grapes while preventing the skins from having any extended contact during the process. Red wines typically gain their color from being fermented in contact with the grape skins, stems and seeds; this is also where the tannic qualities of red wines originate.
The wine itself has a brassy hue, which is deeper than most whites. Although given that the grapes involved are red some color can be expected. On the nose the Deep Blue enjoys notes of red fruit, peach with some minerality. The flavor profile of this wine is what makes it unique, it’s a dry medium to full bodied white wine with notes of strawberry, cherries and some peach. However if the wine is served at room temperature more similarities to a traditional pinot noir shine through with notes of earth and minerality. There is almost a hint of effervescence and it enjoys a healthy acidity making it ideal for food; it pairs beautifully with our daily house made charcuterie.
While we’ve been putting the final touches on our wine list we’ve been offering the Deep Blue as a featured wine by the glass. It’s been so popular we’ve had trouble keeping it in the building.
